Targeted therapy is an emerging medical breakthrough in cancer therapy providing patients with personalized treatment plans. This therapy blocks the signal cancer cells emit causing them [the cancer cells] to multiple uncontrollably and may also trigger apoptosis(process causing cellular death). In short, this process targets the mutation instead of attacking larger areas like chemo and radiation.
This is a cancer treatment revolution! As we learn and develop more targeted therapies, the cure will be one step closer!
The FDA has approved many targeted therapies despite this treatment option being relatively new. Target therapies exist for GI tumors, breast cancer, certain leukemias, non-small cell lung cancer, colorectal and kidney cancers and many more.
